You'll eventually have access to elevators which can help streamline some of the navigation, too (and skip directly to some very tough mini-boss and big boss characters). Have a Nice Death is an imaginative, fast-paced spin on roguelike action that packs a serious punch when you're in the thick of it, especially with the unlockable and upgradeable weapons and abilities to unleash on a bizarre cast of characters. This is a funny and challenging single-player romp that ought to keep you glued to the screen for several hours on end. Leveling up adds extra abilities and other benefits once you continue to fight again. As you're reminded by your pumpkin-headed colleague, Pump Quinn, you need to right the wrong within the organization and hope to avoid "dying," which means starting all over again in a mountain of paperwork of unprocessed souls. Armed with a scythe and several other weapons and spells (and upgrades), you'll hack n' slash through several dark and dangerous levels, confronting all kinds of unique enemies and tougher boss characters. But due to incompetence of his employees, a reluctant Death takes it upon himself to slay his staff and other undead characters that stand between him and his vacation, and to help restore the balance of order.

But instead of dungeons, here you assume the role of Death (represented as a cartoon-like Grim Reaper) who runs, jumps and fights through varying departments of Death Incorporated, a company that processes souls in the afterlife.

Small performance issues but nothing that detracts from the playing experience (at least in the early stages of the game).HAVE A NICE DEATH is a hand-drawn side-scroller/platformer with roguelike elements, as you're running through randomly generated 2D levels. I'll see how the latter plays out with more time.īut yeah, it's good so far out the gate. This is something that the IGN review picks up on (they gave it an 8/10) but it sounds like it can make things more frustrating and progression seems to be very slow. Can see it being difficult as enemies do seem to take a hefty whack of health off of you when you get hit and there aren't really any defensive measures beyond a dash. Not a big deal and again, that's perhaps more to do with being on a Lite rather than the standard Switch model.īeyond that, its solid. Visuals do look a little soft round the edges in some places as well.

It's not enough to make the game crawl and I have only played the opening area so I can't say how it'll go later in the game. Don't think it's running a stable 60fps as it doesn't feel like it is to me (drops look like it goes to sub 30fps so I'd hazard a guess at somewhere around the 30fps mark for frame rate maybe a bit higher) but I am playing on a Switch Lite so performance may be a bit better on the standard Switch undocked/docked. Generally speaking it runs well but there are definite frame rate drops at times, notably when coming out of elevators for each new area and during boss fights/fights where there are multiple enemies and projectiles flying. Gave Have A Nice Death a quick go this morning.
